The short answer
Four routes exist. The retailer takes the old one when they deliver the new one — only if it is disconnected and on the same floor as the door. A utility appliance-recycling program collects it, if your provider runs one and the unit still works; check their current page, terms change. A scrap operator takes it, but will not carry it out and may not want the plastic and refrigerant. Or you book a pickup.
Published: Refrigerator (Standard) $164, Refrigerator (Side-by-Side / French Door) $183, Refrigerator — Built-in / Sub-Zero $238, Mini Fridge $115, Wine Cooler (Large / Floor) $156. Minimum $75, no refrigerant fee, no stair charge.
Measure the doorway before you do anything else
This is the step that derails more Denver fridge projects than any other, and it applies going in as much as coming out.
Brick bungalows from 1900 to 1930 across Congress Park, Park Hill, Platt Park and Baker have interior doorways around thirty inches wide and kitchen entries that were sized for an icebox. A modern French-door refrigerator is roughly thirty-six inches. The fridge you are replacing got in there because it was narrower, or because somebody took a door and its casing off, or because the kitchen has been remodelled since.
The 1950s brick ranches in Harvey Park, Virginia Village and Athmar Park are a little better but not much, and they add a second obstacle: a tight turn from a galley kitchen into a hallway.
Measure the fridge, then measure every doorway on the route, then measure the narrowest point of the turn. Do it before delivery day, not during.
The garage fridge, and why it dies
Nearly every Denver house with a garage has a second fridge in it — beer, game meat, overflow at the holidays. And they fail early here for a reason that has nothing to do with the appliance being old.
A Front Range garage swings from single digits on a January morning to well over a hundred against a south-facing wall in July. Most standard refrigerators are not rated to run in that range. In deep cold the thermostat reads the ambient air, decides the box is cold enough and stops cycling, so the freezer compartment thaws. In extreme heat the compressor runs continuously. Either way the unit works badly and wears out.
The result is a predictable Denver job: an old garage fridge that has not been reliable for years but is too much trouble to move. A standard one is $164 and a mini fridge is $115. If the kitchen unit and the garage unit are both going, that is $164 + $115 = $279.
Prepare it properly
- Empty it completely. Including the door shelves, including the freezer, including whatever is at the back.
- Defrost it. Denver's dry air helps — a defrosted unit dries out fast — but in a chest-style freezer compartment give it a full night.
- Disconnect the water line. Shut off the valve, disconnect, drain the line. If the line runs through an unheated crawl space or garage, drain it fully or it will freeze and split over winter.
- Tape or remove the doors if it will sit outside at all. Even overnight. An unattended fridge with working doors is a hazard to children.
- Tell us where it is. Basement, second floor, detached alley garage. It does not change the price; it changes the crew.
What the whole category costs
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Refrigerator (Standard) | $164 |
| Refrigerator (Side-by-Side / French Door) | $183 |
| Refrigerator — Built-in / Sub-Zero | $238 |
| Refrigerator — Commercial / Glass-Door Merchandiser | $316 |
| Mini Fridge | $115 |
| Freezer (Chest) | $146 |
| Freezer (Upright) | $149 |
| Wine Cooler (Small / Countertop) | $111 |
| Wine Cooler (Large / Floor) | $156 |
| Ice Maker | $115 |
Common Denver pairings: the kitchen fridge and the basement chest freezer, $164 + $146 = $310. A Cherry Creek kitchen remodel taking out a built-in and a floor wine cooler, $238 + $156 = $394.
Where the refrigerant question actually matters
Refrigerators contain refrigerant and, in older units, insulating foam blown with compounds that should not go into a landfill. That is why they are excluded from most bulky-item programs across the metro and why a fridge left in an alley is a problem rather than a favor.
Processing means recovering the refrigerant properly, then separating the steel, the compressor's copper and the plastics. We route refrigeration equipment to that stream, and there is no refrigerant fee bolted onto your invoice at the end — it is in the published price.
If the unit still works and is reasonably efficient, check whether your utility runs a recycling program before you book anything. Those programs generally want working units, and it is the best outcome if yours qualifies.
Getting it out of a Denver basement
Plenty of Denver refrigerators live in basements — an overflow fridge in a finished rec room in Harvey Park, or the original kitchen unit that got retired downstairs. Getting one back up a steep flight that turns at a landing, with under seven feet of headroom at the turn, is a two-person job with straps and a plan.
It is also the reason the old unit is still down there. Delivery crews would not do it and a couple of friends with a dolly discovered why on the third step.
We do it, and the price does not change: a standard fridge is $164 out of a basement, out of a detached alley garage, or off a third-floor Capitol Hill walk-up landing. No stair charge and no walk-up fee.
Frequently asked questions
How much does refrigerator removal cost in Denver?
$164 for a standard refrigerator, $183 for a side-by-side or French door, $238 for a built-in and $115 for a mini fridge. That includes emptying-day pickup from any floor and disposal, with no refrigerant fee. The minimum for a visit is $75.
Will the delivery crew take my old fridge?
Often, but usually only the unit being replaced, only if it is disconnected, and only if it is on the same floor as the door. In central Denver bungalows with a basement fridge or a narrow kitchen doorway that last condition is what fails.
Why does my garage refrigerator keep failing?
Ambient temperature. A Front Range garage runs from single digits in January to over a hundred against a south wall in July, and most standard fridges are not rated for that range. In deep cold the thermostat stops cycling and the freezer thaws; in extreme heat the compressor never rests.
Can I leave a fridge in the alley?
No. Appliances are excluded from most bulky programs across the metro and the unit stays your responsibility. It is also a genuine safety hazard with the doors on. Check your own jurisdiction's current page if you want to confirm, then book a pickup.
Do you charge extra to bring it up from the basement?
No. There is no stair charge. A standard fridge out of a finished basement rec room in Harvey Park with a turning stair is the same $164 as one standing in an open Highlands Ranch kitchen.
